Takashi Murakami at MCA Chicago – The Octopus Eats It’s Own Leg

Opening on the 6th June, Takashi Murakami’s latest extravaganza of superflat pop art infused with traditional folklore takes centre stage at the MCA Chicago.

“The Octopus Eat’s It’s Own Leg” includes many of Takashi Murakkami’s signature works. Walls are adorned with a sea of super smiling flowers and the family of cute and menacing Murakami characters all make an appearance as an homage to the artist’s spectacular career.

True to the title of the exhibition, a new Murakami Octopus character makes it’s debut.

Takashi Murakami became the ambassador of Japanese emerging art, setting up GEISAI in 2001 to help encourage the emergence of Japanese talent. Successes included artists like Chiho Aoshima, Aya Takano and Mr.

Takashi Murakami’s excitement lead to him to pour all of his finances into operating galleries and nurturing the young artists. By his own admission, things got out of hand, and the excitement quickly turned into resentment.

Murakami explains that the exhibition “The Octopus Eats It’s Own Leg” speaks to the “atmosphere of desperation” as Murakami battled the duel roles of artist and mentor to a generation of young artists.
